What if love was magic?Isabella Fox is a very mediocre witch. Run out of the last few towns for spells gone wrong, she's ready to settle down but can't quite find a place to call home. Fortunately, there's one town where her mediocrity might not actually be a problem... The charming little town of Benevolence, high in the peaks of Glimmer Mountain, a storybook little village that looks picturesque and practically perfect in every way...But there's more to Benevolence than meets the eye. The town itself is full of magic...and secrets, and not all are welcome. Outcast shapeshifter, Emily, lives alone in the mountains. She is a mystery to Isabella, until they happen upon each other by chance in the snowy wood, like magic. Love begins to grow between the two women, despite the chill of the winter and the possibility that all might not be right in Benevolence...Set in Bridget Essex's beloved fantastical world featured in A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER, UNDER HER SPELL is a charming, stand alone adventure about a mediocre witch, a gorgeous shapeshifter, and a magical love story that will warm your heart.

Under Her Spell (Audible Audio Edition) Bridget Essex Rose Clearwater Rose and Star Press Books

In the depths of winter, I like to find books that are like a warm hug for the soul, gentle readings to balance out the fierce weather and chilly days. Under Her Spell, the newest novel from Bridget Essex, is the story of a not-very talented witch, a beautiful and mysterious woman who is also a deer, a town full of folks with animal forms, and the wheel of the year. How delightful to find matriarchal religions used in fantasy fiction not as a "gotcha!" but as a beloved part of the story's worldbuilding. How lovely to slip into the town of Benevolence and the witch academy at Lunarose Abbey for a few hours, wiling away the winter with their traditions.

Isabella, worst witch in Arktos, is down to her last post as Village Witch, in a strange town known as Benevolence, where the shopkeep can be a woman and a goose, and the child of two birds can be a goat. Isabella has one task: weave the spell to keep the town safe at Solstice, and don't cross paths with that terrible deer-girl Emily, whose father ruined everything. Neither of these things happen, to the very best effect, and Emily, Isabella, and the delightful, chatty Alice (Isabella's tabby cat familiar) live and love together, and solve a ghostly tragedy at Imbolc, and save the an ancient god at Ostara. I liked Celtic Pagan mythos used to this effect, woven into the character's lives seamlessly (with talk of other religions in their worldbuilding, as well--it's a very multi-pantheon kind of world). The characters are endearing, the love sweet, and the details of the world quite cozy. A perfect winter read, and I can't wait to follow the rest of the Wheel along with Bridget Essex.

Under Her Spell (Audible Audio Edition) Bridget Essex Rose Clearwater Rose and Star Press Books Reviews

This is the first book I've read by this writer and it was okay. I loved her voice and the descriptions in the book. She is really a wordsmith, but beyond the first part of the story things got a little dull to me.
Enjoyed this tale of magic, witchcraft and love. I will gladly recommend this book to anyone who are looking for a little bit of magic in their life. Very charming and adorable characters. Thank you, Bridget, for sharing your talent.
I really enjoyed reading this story about a witch and a changer. I love that they weren't the best in their class or leading folks to war. This was a fun read and I highly recommend it.
This book is just simply wonderful. I enjoyed reading this so very much. It takes place in the land that Ms. Essex's lady Knight books made famous and is a brilliant fairytale. Isabella is a mediocre witch without a home and Emily is an outcast changer. They fall in love and the story follows their adventures. I especially enjoyed the side story of Geine and Bryn.
I love Isabella's drive She falls down, gets run out of towns and villages for failing at her job, but tries to better herself anyway. She's an adult who hasn't lost her sense of awe and wonder at the world around her. And no matter how badly she has been treated, she still keeps her heart hopeful and open, giving others the benefit of doubt. Her familiar is witty and wise, and of course Isabella ignores her pragmatism. Only one thing can come of not paying attention when you've been duly warned by someone who knows you better than you know yourself. Isabella's love-interest is sweet, tolerant and kind...it's her nature. I would have liked to have "gotten in her head" more. She needed "fleshing" out character l-wise. Still a lovely winter read.
Great fun book!
Controlling spells seems easy for all the witches except for Isabella. Her spells go more often wrong than right and this gets her in trouble over and over again. After she has to flee again, an unexpected but forbidden encounter with a beautiful outcast change her life forever. This story is set in an intriguing world. A world I can only dream of. But fortunately, there are authors like Bridget who regularly take us to this world and I'm so grateful for that. Under her spell is a very compelling, creative, warm, magical, amazing love story with a fascinating mix of unusual characters. It is a thrilling adventure with an excellent storyline and it has everything you would want in a book. I simply lost myself in this one and I highly recommend it.
